St Nicholas Wives Group
On March 21st a group of seventeen members
met at Woodstock to hear Tony Hope and his wife Janet speak about their
time as Mayor and Mayoress of Test Valley Borough Council. Although a
mayor is elected by fellow councillors for a year it really involves three
years of extra civic duties, firstly as deputy, then as mayor and finally
as outgoing mayor. Tony explained some of the history behind the position
of mayor. We heard how during their year in office Tony and his wife attended
six hundred official engagements. It is part of the Mayor's duties to
chair meetings and raise money for charities. One day in December Tony
and Janet attended eight functions, with such a full diary it is evident
why a Mayoral car is a necessity. When asked what qualities a mayor needs
Tony was emphatic that firstly it requires a genuine interest in people
and secondly stamina. From the way that Tony and Janet spoke it was
obvious that they enjoyed their time as Mayor of Test Valley even though
it required a full time commitment with very few evenings to enjoy a normal
home life.
Our next meeting is on May 16th at 7.30pm at Woodstock. We will be meeting
Sian Newland our local police officer. Sian will be talking about her
work on this beat.

Long Bridge
The Hampshire Rights of Way team has now removed Long Bridge at the Cleeves, which was damaged and unsafe, and the plan is to replace it with a wooden bridge as soon as possible.
