Longparish Darts
and The Plough Games Room
First the bad news (and a bit of history).
Following the demise of the Longparish Sports & Social Club some 10
years ago, the darts team has been nomadic, playing at the Home Guard
Club, Wherwell, Picket Piece Club and The Coronation Arms, St. Mary Bourne,
eventually re-establishing itself in Longparish at the Cricketers about
5 years ago.
Last year, like many other village pubs faced with high brewery rents, breweries that charge their own landlords more for drinks than the other people they supply, high business rates for country pubs, a decreasing regular drinking trade and with the previous four landlord failing to make a go of it, the Cricketers had to expand its food trade in order to survive. Whilst this was preferable to losing the pub, it has resulted in the loss of the darts board and pool table. The pool team disbanded and the darts team again had to move out of the village.
Now the good news. (and the future).
The new landlord at the Plough, John Goodyear, with the help of the darts
team is converting the old tack room at the rear of the Pub into a games
room. As well as providing a home venue for the darts team it is envisaged
that computer games and a pool table will be provided and it will act
as a meeting place for the young adults in the community. It would also
open up the opportunity for other Pub league activities such as a Ladies
Monday night darts team, Crib team, Quiz team etc without impacting on
the existing bar and dining areas.
Work is well under way and the room will be in an acceptable
state for the commencement of the Friday night darts league in early September.
Any one wishing to join the team should contact me. The darts league will
accept new signings after the start of the season during the first half
of the season.
At our monthly meeting on Monday, 19th August. we had a lovely afternoon and a barbecue at Stuart and Daphne Bevans’. We all enjoyed it greatly and would like to thank them very much.

The roundabout in the Playground
The new wood for the roundabout has arrived and it should be back in action by the time you read this report. The wood was kindly donated and cut by Input Joinery. A huge thank you goes to them and to the people, particularly Jim Neal and Harry Johnston(seen here in action), Martin Hulme and, Nigel Goodliffe who have done the repair work.

Tennis tournament Many thanks to everyone who came to play, help or support the Tennis Tournament we held on Monday, 24th June. Approximately 70 people played and 100 people came to lunch. The final result was £1,800 raised and we are pleased to donate £900 each to the Longparish Community Poroject and to the Magpie Cancer Care campaign st the Royal County Hospital in Winchester. John Ellicock spoke on behalf of the Community project and Tim Jobling and Dr. Chris James on behalf of the Cancer Centre. Our thanks to the Dinesons, Ellicocks and Sterndale-Bennetts for opening their beautiful gardens for the charities too. A hot and happy day was had by all. Thanks to everyone who so had to make the event such a success. |
We shall be having a Harvest Lunch together in the Village Hall following our Harvest Service in St. Nicholas on September 15th. Last year’s event was very successful and much enjoyed by all.
Tickets are £2.50 for adults, £1.50 for children for a delicious
2 course lunch, including a drink.
