CLEAN UP DAY

SATURDAY 29TH MARCH 2003

On behalf of Longparish Parish Council I would like to thank everyone who turned out at the end of March for the Longparish clean up day.

As we had cleaned the stream out so thoroughly in November it was unnecessary to do any further work in that area.   Instead we undertook the following jobs;

We cut down the brambles which were encroaching over the fence onto the road opposite the stream.   Brambles were also cleared away in the field adjacent to the children’s playground which has made the whole area a lot more open.   We lit a bonfire, much to my sons delight, to clear all the debris.

We cleared mud from the footpath adjacent to the school at the request of a villager who had found it very slippery to use following the recent flooding.

We cleared rubbish from the verges of the main roads into the village, including removing a dumped microwave oven.

Afterwards volunteers enjoyed sandwiches and chips at The Plough, sitting outside as the weather was so good.

CHILDRENS PLAYGROUND

The Parish Council is very grateful to Purbeck for raising the ground level under the shelter in the children’s playground free of charge.   Hopefully, this area will not now flood when we get heavy rainfall.

The top-soil around the shelter has now been seeded and well watered, thanks go to the cricket club for the loan of their hose-pipe.

GOOD NEWS FOR PARENTS OF YOUNG CHILDREN.

  It is hoped to purchase another item of playground equipment suitable for young children.    If you would like to suggest an item of equipment please contact me on 720207 before the next parish council meeting on 12th May.

St Nicholas Wives Group

In March our group met in the village hall, the main part of our meeting was a quiz hosted by Wendy Holloway from the recently closed bric à brac shop in Andover. Wendy produced a series of collectable items to test our commonsense and knowledge of old things. The evening was great fun with a friendly rivalry between the two teams.

The April meeting was an informative introduction to a group called PALS. The aim of the group, which has funding from both Europe and Hampshire, is to promote life long education. If you are interested in the initiative there is more information in the village shop or feel free to contact our local volunteer and trained “learning champion” Val Barber in Barton Stacey she can be contacted preferably in the evenings on 01962 760911. Mary Whitworth is the area co-ordinator for NW Hants, she is based at Cricklade House and can be contacted on 01264 360084.

The next meeting of the group will be held at Woodstock on May 15 th at 7.30pm. (Please note the change of venue). Our speaker will be John Chitty a vet from Andover he will be talking about his professional life.
