Ladies Cricket Match

On Sunday, 31 st August, a team of ladies from Hurstbourne Priors played one from Longparish at cricket, in Hurstbourne Priors.

The idea was born during a casual conversation between Jan West LP), Lois Jones (HP) and John Perkins of Hurstbourne Priors Cricket Club.   A practice session in each village revealed a depth of untapped talent and two teams were formed.   John Young bravely coached the Longparish team while Tim Shelley took on the coaching of the home side.   It was agreed to use a soft ball, bowling would be underarm and there would be 20 overs each side.

Menfolk, families and a good number of supporters from each village gathered on a sunny afternoon and battle commenced.   Umpires were Mark Williams and John Young.   Longparish went in to bat first, scoring 68 for 9.   Hurstbourne went in to face the Longparsih bowling and scored 56 for 6 despite having an injured “man”.   Support for both teams was vociferous with great encouragement to “keep on running”, sadly resulting in several ladies being run out.   A check had to be kep on the Longparish team who occasionally seemed to have 12 players on the field!

A magnificent cricket tea followed, served by Pauline Curl, Marilyn Smith, Julia Butcher and Jean Chalke.   It was a wonderful friendly day, full of fun and some understated gentle rivalry.   There is already talk of a return match next year.   Congratulations to Jan and Lois for having a good idea.      Isabel Johnson

Longparish School

We have welcomed 16 new pupils to the School this term, so the roll stands at 95.   The school year has got off to a good start, thanks to the fine weather.

The Infant children have spent a day at Sparsholt College, learning about farming which included looking at cows, sheep and pigs as well as crops.

The Junior children had an exciting day at Beaulieu, where the 8/9 years learned about life in the Abbey and attended felting and calligraphy workshops.   The 10/11 Years old dressed as Victorians and enacted a typical day as Victorian children.

We are delighted to entertain our senior citizen friends at our monthly lunches.   The children look forward to these occasions.   The next is on October 21 st .   Please ring Christine Leach 720317 to book a place.
