Vera Hughes BA FRSA is an acknowledged international speaker on many topics. Her background as an actor, trainer and writer makes her an entertaining and clear speaker to all types of groups. Her voice and warm personality allow her to inform, enliven and stimulate audiences. She is very much in demand and we are very fortunate to engage Vera to entertain us.

From PageTo Stage is a behind the scenes look at how a show develops from the words in the script to its final professional production. It touches on –how a play is chosen, without infringing the copyright; how the actors learn the lines and rehearse; how the music is composed and recorded and about the costumes, props and lighting. From the London fringe theatre to a private residence and a bishop's palace, this lively talk reveals the background to getting a show from page to stage.

Management of Southside Common

Work on the Common over the summer months has been limited to the strimming of informal paths and of patches of dominant vegetation, such as nettles, hogweed and docks.   The denser areas of scrub have been left undisturbed to help encourage nesting birds. Strimming has been slowly having an effect and has allowed herbaceous marsh plants such as Angelica, Marsh Thistle, Marsh Bird's Foot Trefoil. Tormentil and St. John's Wort to thrive.

Dates for work parties this winter are as follows, from 10am until 1pm:

Saturday 8 th November

Saturday 13 th December

Work will include strimming, raking up, tree felling, planting trees, shrubs, cleaning out the hedge and having a bonfire.   Please bring work clothes, waterproof shoes or boots, gloves and saws, pruners, spades etc.   There will be a small number of tools available.

Pumpkin Contest on Saturday 4 October

The contest was great fun.   Entries ranged in size from ½oz to 235lbs and there was a huge variety of unusual entries.   This year there was a class for decorated pumpkins for the first time.   The Playgroup carried the day with Bogity Bog's car but everyone who entered did very well.   Special thanks go to John and Jane for hosting the event at The Plough, to the people who sponsored the hot dogs and the prizes, to Nona and Nigel for judging, to the people who gave raffle prizes, to the last minute clerical team and to everyone who made the show such fun by entering.   See results and pictures here.
