LADY KATHLEEN BIRNIE
15 th February 1911 21 st November.2003
Lady Kathleen Birnie died peacefully on 21st November 2003 at the Amesbury Abbey Nursing Home. She was 92 years old.
Sally, as she was always known to her family and friends, was born Lady Marguerite Kathleen Courtenay, the third daughter of the Reverend the 16 th Earl of Devon. Her father unexpectedly inherited the title upon the death of both his elder brothers. Her early childhood was spent in a country vicarage before they moved to Powderham Castle near Exeter.
In her early twenties she went out to India where she subsequently met her husband Colonel Bill' Birnie. He served with the Army in India for many years and was a member of the famous, albeit unsuccessful, Everest Expedition of 1933. Upon retirement he became Secretary of the Church of England Children's Society from 1949 until 1965.
In 1968 they came to live at The Cottage in Longparish opposite the school. They both loved their garden and after his death in 1976 she continued to keep it in good order. In later years she became an expert at lighting bonfires and pruning apple trees
In the winter she was to be found in the kitchen boiling marmalade. This then , together with jars of her gooseberry jam, became the centrepiece of the produce stand at the annual Village Fete in the summer. Over the years she must have raised nearly £3000 from her sales of marmalade.
Throughout her time here she produced beautiful flower arrangements to decorate St Nicholas' Church and dried flowers for the Christmas bazaar. She was always very generous in providing cutting material from the garden.
She was the best of neighbours and her reminiscences of life in India are fondly remembered. She will be sadly missed as a much-loved member of the village community and our condolences go to her two daughters, Susan and Angela, and the grandchildren.
