AUTUMN CLEAN UP

SATURDAY 20TH NOVEMBER 2004

10.00 A.M. TO 1 P.M.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED to help with the village autumn clean up day.

This year we have added PAINTING THE SKATERAMP .   Jeremy Barber will supervise this and will provide paint and paintbrushes.   Just come along wearing old clothes (and gloves, if it's cold)

CLEANING THE STREAM .   We hope to clear the stream of weed and dead leaves.   The water level will drop by several inches and the stream will remain clear for the rest of the winter.   We also cut back any over-hanging branches, cut down the brambles and remove the stinging nettles.   Any debris is removed to stop the stinging nettles and weeds spreading.

Please remain on the road side of the stream as we have water voles along both sides of the stream.   As these aquatic mammals are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 we do not want to disturb their burrows on the far side of the stream by walking on top of them, or dumping debris on top of the far bank.   Please do not remove all vegetation from the water on the far side of the stream, or cut the vegetation below 15 cms on the far bank as the voles use the vegetation as food and also need ground cover to protect them from predators.

CUTTING ROADSIDE BRAMBLES .   We also plan to cut back the brambles pushing through the fence opposite the stream.   This will make walking safer for everyone, including school children.

Please bring along your own equipment such as rakes, pruning saws and secateurs.   Wheelbarrows are useful for removing the debris.   Wellington boots, gloves and hats are also recommended.

CHILDREN ALSO WELCOME TO HELP UNDER PARENTAL SUPERVISION.

FREE LIGHT LUNCH OF SANDWICHES AND CHIPS AT THE CRICKETERS FOR ALL VOLUNTEERS!    Buy your own drinks and please leave dirty boots in the porch.

Auction of Promises result

A very successful Auction of Promises was organised by the Friends of Longparish School and the fundraising committee for the School & Community Project on 17 th October.   About 150 enjoyed a convivial evening in the magnificent marquee on Newtons, kindly lent by Richard and Jan West.   Thanks to the generosity of those who gave promises and those who bought them, encouraged by the indefatigable auctioneer, Graham Healey, £5635.00 was raised.   The Plough provided a fine pig roast

Village Hall thanks
