Gordon Barnes
1916 - 2005
Gordon Henry Barnes was born in St. Mary Bourne in 1916 and had lived in Longparish with his wife, Mabel, for the 61 years of their married life, first at Meadow Lawn Cottage and then in North Acre. Gordon was a quiet man but certainly loved life and loved people.
He started work as a carpenter/joiner until he fell off a ladder and broke both arms but that didn't seem to stop him getting on with life. He loved his garden, especially his prize chysanthemums. He loved animals and frequently took in strays; he befriended many animals, including Dolly the sheep whom he met on his countryside walks.
He and Mabel were devoted to each other. Tragically, their only son Raymond, died at only 6 months old, yet that brought them closer together.
Many in the village had a huge affection for Gordon; one could not help warming to his lovely sense of humour and the twinkle in his eye. Our thoughts and prayers and love go to Mabel, now in Andover Nursing Home. Her friends mean a lot to her.

Sponsored by Barker Son & Isherwood
Following a short break over Christmas and New year, our three teams in the Winchester Indoor League have started 2005 in a positive way by recording good wins in the majority of games played. Indeed, the Seconds are still in a good position to challenge for promotion to Division 2..
An added opportunity to work off any extra pounds from the festive season will be provided by indoor nets available to all players from the end of January. ( Seniors at John Hanson from Thursday, 27 th January, 8 9pm: Colts at Testbourne from Tuesday, 1 st February, 6.30 7.30pm.
The Club's groundsman, Ken Ball, is very busy as he continues to keep a close eye on the well being of the ground, and in particular on the newly treated square. In addition to dealing with the activities of local rabbits and moles, the continuing rain is not to his liking as the puddles start to appear in front of the pavilion can cause early matches to be cancelled, but, hopefully, we will have a good dry spell before we begin our summer fixtures in April.

We are pleased to report that the building work is progressing well. The walls of the new classrooms are nearly finished and the roof trusses are in place. We remain optimistic that work will start on renovating the playing field later this term.
