Doris Kathleen Aldridge (1925-2005)
Doris (Smith) was born in Longparish in one of the Longparish Station Cottages and went to school here. The family moved to Fullerton when the railway line closed, in her teenage years. She had a brother, Bill who has died, and sister, Beryl who still lives at Fullerton
She started work at bunny's (as it was then) in the High Street in Andover and carried on working there when it became Scats. She met Eric there, as he was a lorry driver and doing deliveries for Scats. Eric was proud of his beautiful girlfriend, particularly when others at work praised her, and they married in 1951. they lived at Weyhill for the first 27 years of their marriage, then moved to North Acre, back in Longparish. After having been a wife at home' for several years, Doris went back to work at the International Tea co. in Andover. But she was happy at home- -sharing everything with her beloved Eric, enjoying being a homemaker. She enjoyed their holidays, particularly in Devon, but also being at home knitting, watching TV and also watching the birds visiting their garden, she loved the birds.
Her death was very sudden and unexpected, so a terrible shock to Eric. Our prayers and thoughts are with Eric now and we hope he will be aware of the many friends he has in Longparish, the place he and Doris loved so much.

16 year old Longparish resident Nick Jolliffe has been chosen, following a tough selection weekend, to go on an international Scout expedition to Uganda. Planned for the summer of 2006 the expedition team will help build and/or decorate new school buildings in the Namwenda area of Kamuli. Nick is part of a team organised by a local Scout leader who has successfully run two previous trips to Uganda to provide extra classrooms at a school in another village in the same area of Uganda.
The school in Namwenda currently consists of three large straw shelters and a half built brick room all of which must now be demolished to meet local health and safety standards.
The aim of the expedition team is to raise money to build a new single brick building housing three classrooms, an office and a storeroom. In addition, a new five position pit latrine will also be built (the school currently has two pit toilets in very poor condition). New tables and chairs will also be provided for the new classrooms.
The local Kamuli government are also expected to match the expeditions funding to building two further blocks of two classrooms and a five position pit latrine.
As well as raising funds the expedition team will spend eleven days in Namwenda decorating and/or building the classroom. Many of the school aged children in the Namwemda catchment area miss out on any education today. The project will enable the school to grow from teaching 400 children and to offer education facilities for up to 1,000 children.
If enough money is raised then additional items such as educational text books and equipment, sports equipment, exercise books, pens and pencils, clocks and other classroom equipment will also be provided by the team.
Nick is hoping to raise funds for the expedition through a combination of donations and other fund raising. To this end Nick will be available for baby-sitting, lawn mowing and other local casual work during this summer vacation. Please call Nick on 01264 720207 for more details.
