Memories of twenty-two years
as Head Teacher of Longparish Primary School
Miss Rosalind Hobrough, Head Teacher of Longparish School, retires at the end of the Christmas term after 22 years at the school, three years as deputy head and 19 years as Head Teacher, and we would like your help.
Longparish owes her a great deal for her guidance of hundreds of youngsters during their formative years and we would like to provide the opportunity for anyone with special memories to record these and express their thanks to her.
If you were a pupil, or a parent of pupils, at Longparish School since 1983 and would like to sign in a special memories book for Miss Hobrough and/or to provide a few words of your reminiscences, could you please contact Jane Young at Elm Lodge, Longparish, Hampshire SP11 6PW (01264 720233 evenings or answerphone) or by email at janecyoung@yahoo.co.uk.
We are also creating a photo collage of her time at Longparish for her to keep as a memento. So if you have any photos which may capture a special moment during the years from 1983 until now, please could you send them to Jane Young. We will scan them and return them to you, so please ensure that you include your name and address.
We would appreciate your involvement, which will help to make a special occasion a very memorable one.

The Borough Council Executive has adopted a proposal to change to fortnightly refuse collection from next March. Recyclables will be collected in the intervening weeks. Your parish council considers that fortnightly collection will be unhygienic. House fly maggots hatch in less than two weeks. Imagine the result of a fortnight's worth of nappies, food waste or colostomy bags festering in a wheelie bin in the summer. And think of how unpleasant it will be for the dustmen as well as householders. When the proposal was first mooted we advised the Borough Council of our views, in no uncertain terms. This was reinforced by a petition in the shop which attracted 200 signatures and was presented to TVBC. Sadly, our elected borough councillors have not taken notice of our views.
If you feel that the Executive should change their minds please write to the leader of the Council who is Councillor Ian Carr, 81 Mercia Avenue, Charlton, Andover, Hants, SP10 4EJ and copy your letter to the parish council and to our local member, Jim Neal, Mallards, The Common, Longparish, Andover, Hants, SP11 6PH. If enough people write then maybe the Executive will listen.

The Longparish village cemetery is in need of some volunteer work.
Rabbits and subsidence have left a number of holes that need to be filled (and we are not talking about graves!) Once the ground is level, the mower will be able to do its job more efficiently.
We have the dirt, but need some volunteers for a bit of spade and wheelbarrow work on
Saturday, 17th September at 11.30 am
Would all those willing to volunteer an hour or so of their time to help us, please contact Catherine Sweet on 01264 720550

Our meeting in July was well attended for a much appreciated illustrated talk by Graham Darrah about Trees in Longparish'.
In August we held our annual barbecue at Lower Mill and as always we are most grateful to Mrs. Dinesen for kindly inviting us to share her beautiful garden for the occasion. Our thanks also to Joe Thomas for the expertly cooked sausages and to all who helped to organise the evening and the accompanying food.

Enjoying the barbecue

Missing key?
A key was found on 23rd August dangling from a blackberry bush overhanging Southside Road.
It is a small metal key with a brown parcel label attached to it saying 'Mower Shed'.
On the back of the label, crossed off, it says
''shop soiled flymo, no grassbag 120.00'
If you have lost such a key, please contact Alison Cooper on 01264 720324.
Longparish Cricket Club
Sponsored by Barker,Son & Isherwood, Solicitors
As I write this article, the 2005 season is moving to a close with many good things to reflect on. You will have been following our Club's progress through the efforts of both teams during the season, and like me, you may well have been gratified by two aspects of their success. The first is that both First and Second elevens have won most of their games well and are both hoping to finish the season with promotion. It had been our goal in 2005 to bring the two sides closer together. That goal seems to have eluded us but at least we are moving in the right direction.
The second gratifying aspect of our success is that several of our youngsters have made it into one or other of the village sides and in so doing have acquitted themselves very well. In all cases they have played with bravery and maturity and enjoyed the experience, on some cases their contribution has turned the game. These young lads have been a credit to the village, and to their coaches who have prepared them so quickly for their role in the senior sides. With the continued generous support of our sponsors, Barker, Son and Isherwood Solicitors and the dedication of our coaches and assistant coaches the colts have grown from strength to strength. The youngsters have even had an opportunity to wear their new shirts in a few friendly games this season and we look forward to them doing it in competition for the village next season.
Regrettably there is a sour note to managing such a creditable enterprise and that is, there are a few local youths who cannot see that the club is their heritage and one-day it will be theirs to enjoy and run. Over the past few months we have once more been attacked by mindless vandalism that saps at the resolve of officers dedicated to the vision of club cricket for all and the limited funds that are so necessary to moving our cricket club forward. Funds that many of you reading this article contribute to the Club. The attacks vary in severity, but all you who have been on the end of vandalism, know that the attack is the issue and not the severity. We are blessed to have proactive support from our Police, but they will only react after the event and I hope that we can find a way of preventing the events in the first place. Please help.
If you have children please don't allow them to be at the cricket club without proper supervision from a Club official. Encourage them to become members and enjoy the benefits of an excellent facility on their doorstep with a chance to learn a game for life and keep fit at the same time. The Club grounds are private property, managed by Longparish Cricket Club for the Members of the Club and membership is open to all, but those using the grounds without the knowledge or permission of the Management Committee of the Club are trespassing and cannot be protected from the law. The position is now so serious that the Police will arrest anyone trespassing on the suspicion of criminal damage.
Just to put the recent incidents in context. On more than one occasion, someone has been assaulted on the club premises. On one occasion threatening behaviour has resulted in a police investigation. On another, motoring offences on the cricket ground threatened the safety of residents and missiles were thrown. Damage to club property continues to be sustained and obscene graffiti seem to delight the perpetrator with no thought for the offence caused to those who have to repair the damage.
If everyone were Club Members, no one would damage the Club, but if you care about the pearl within your village, please help us to protect it for the next generation. Keep your children away if unsupervised by a club official, and help to keep any children away at other times. There is no reason for children to be around the grounds after dark. If you are passing and see children congregating please move them along, for their own safety. If you see something that risks the club or its good name, please report it to the local police and help to guarantee that the club is here for at least as long as it has been in the past.Your support for the teams and the Club will be greatly appreciated.
The 100 Club Winners for July are:

3 £15:00 M.P Turner
