The Plough has a new licensee, Paul, who will be delighted to welcome you. More in next Month’s magazine.
At the initial meeting in May at Longmead House, it was decided to start monthly coffee mornings.
The next one will be on 13th June at 11am at Meadow View, Southside Road. All are welcome.
This report covers the May meeting and the Annual parish meeting. Minutes of meetings are on the village website www.longparish.org.uk.
Officers of the Council. Jeremy Barber was re-elected as Chairman and Mike Johnson as vice-chairman. Details of the membership of committees are on the village website and on the notice boards.
Planning. There were no planning applications.
Open Spaces. Thanks very much to all who helped at the Clean Up day and to The Plough for lunch afterwards. A great deal of work was done on the playground and the football field, benches were washed and litter picked.
The skate ramp has been repaired.
Work on the Ashburn Rest will start soon, so don’t worry if it is absent for a while. As much of the historic fabric will be preserved as possible and the restored seat will be higher to make it easier to use.
This has been another busy year and thanks are due to all who have helped in so many ways. This has been a significant year with publication of the Parish Plan and the opening of our new community hall.
The main presentation was on the new Longparish Community Association, which is one of the ideas which came from the Parish Plan. A lot of background work has been done and the LCA is now registered as a charity. Membership is only £1 and there are lots of plans including the youth club (another Parish Plan proposal) and a series of community events starting with the Midsummer Fun Day on 10 June. There is more elsewhere in this issue of Hill & Valley.
The next Council meeting is on Monday 12 June in the Village Hall committee room. It will start around 8pm after the council’s annual tour of the parish. Meetings are public and all parishioners are welcome to come and can speak.

Please contact Peter Jones on 720551 or Cathy Yelf on 720790 if you’re able to lend a hand or if you’ve a brilliant idea for a new stall of attraction. Money raised is split between the village hall and the church but the main aim is a day which everyone enjoys.
Leaving the nest This is the time of year when our Year 11 pupils take their leave, ready to do their best in their GCSE exams. This year John Waterer, our Head of Maths (38 years, 128 days) prior to his retirement at Christmas, was our guest at the special Leavers’ Assembly, presenting pupils with their Records of Achievement.
As has now become a tradition, pupils released a balloon each, along with a tag capturing their hopes and dreams for the future. They have been a tremendous year group ~ who have raised over £4,000 for charity ~ and we wish them every success and happiness.
Christian Aid Each week we have a theme for our assemblies and this year we included Christian Aid Week in our calendar. The pupils responded in their usual generous fashion. Following a thoughtful assembly led by Year 11 pupils each tutor group was given the challenge of filling a Christian Aid envelope. When a representative from each group brought out their envelopes during the following assembly, the Christian Aid carrier bag containing their gifts, totalling £286.81, was too heavy to hold.
Time for cricket We
have for sometime now had a Girls’ Rugby team ~ and now cricket!
Our
new Head of Music, Becky Reed, has started Girls’ Cricket training
every Thursday lunchtime ~ introducing some new enthusiasts to the game.
Caretaker retires Many of you will know Arthur Williams, who has been our Caretaker for the past 11 years. Arthur has just retired, one year early, as he has not been in good health. He has given very loyal service to the school and community and we know you will want to join with us in wishing him and Maureen a happy, long and well-deserved retirement.
The team which has had the most successful start to this season is the U11s who had a comfortable win over Trojan B. Watched by their supportive families, the youngsters gave a very composed and competent account of themselves, and having posted a total of 262, they made scoring difficult for the home side with good bowling and fielding performances.
