Teams from LCC can look back on their winter programmes with a great deal of satisfaction; the three teams in the Winchester league all finishing as runners-up in their respective divisions, the two Colts teams at Dummer performing well, and the mixed age Longparish Longhops ending as winners of Division 3 of the Ruddles County Indoor League.
The 2007 summer programme has now got underway with the two Hampshire League sides and the Under 15 colts all winning their opening matches. The First XI had an excellent win in their County 3 match on the 5th May against Andover III, losing only one wicket in reaching their target of 200. On the same day the Seconds convincingly beat Shrewton II, scoring 209 for 3 in the 32nd over when chasing 205.

After a successful winter indoors, Longparish CCs under 13s and under 15s moved outdoors, training on Monday at 6.30pm, with games for the under 15s on Friday evenings, and on Sunday morning for the under 13s.
The under 15s started their season well with a win against Eastleigh. Stuart Tognarelli (30 ret), Andrew Hooker (15) William de Cani (15) and Matt Jackman (17) were the main contributors to a Longparish total of 107. Eastleigh skilfully paced their reply. Despite Adam Stone, Jack Tosdevine and Ben Unsworth taking wickets, Eastleigh kept up the required run rate and after the penultimate over just needed 8 runs for victory. Longparish captain Matt Jackman bowled the final over. He took wickets with his second and third ball, and ran a batsman out off his sixth, to leave Eastleigh 6 runs short.
The under 13s first game, away to Bishops Waltham, was another tight finish. Owen Karin and Charles Sherwood picked up wickets as Bishops Waltham scored 113 for 3 from 20 overs. Captain William de Cani (25 ret) and a 44 run partnership between Tom Burley and Brad Hooker, were the main contributors to Longparishs final total of 104.
The under 13s were in action again two days later, away to Andover B. In driving wind and steady drizzle they limited Andover to a score of 118 for 3, Brad Hooker, and Michael Taplin picking up a wicket each. Longparish batted well in the fading light falling two runs short, the main contributors were William de Cani (25 ret), Alex Coetzee (13), William Jackman (17) and Charles Sherwood (11)
Coaches Justin Jackman, John Young and Mike Wakefield, and sponsors Barker, Son and Isherwood can be proud of Longparish colts performances in the opening games of the season. Several of the under 15 side are competing for places in the senior sides, while the under 13s, predominantly under 12s with a smattering of under11s are competing against bigger more experienced sides. With games coming thick and fast over the coming months these are exciting times for Longparish colts cricket. Chris de Cani
Doris loved life, her family and Longparish and so was content and happy living and working most of her life at the watercress beds on Nuns Walk. She was born in St Mary Bourne, a member of the Biggs family, and had 3 sisters and 2 brothers. They moved to the watercress beds when Doris was only one year old and her mother died when she was just 12, so she and her elder sister, Queenie, became almost mums to the younger ones.
They were a close family and worked together (apart from Doris short spell as a hairdresser) as well as sharing many family gatherings and parties and a lot of fun too. She enjoyed dancing, was active in the Longparish Sports and Social Club and ladies darts team. She loved knitting and sewing and was an excellent cook. Her main love, though was her family her beloved Bruce, their two daughters, Trudy and Shirley, her sons-in-law, her grandchildren, Martin, Keri and Jenny and her great-grandchildren, Bethany and Scott. With her mischievous sense of humour and her innocent and unspoilt view of the world, people were what counted most in her life. She enjoyed some lovely holidays abroad with her youngest sister Dorothy and her husband Roy.
Many people gathered in St Nicholas Church to pay their last respects to Doris and to pay tribute to this lovely lady who touched the heart of everyone she met. We continue to pray for the family in their sad loss. They gave me a super photo of the St Nicholas choir in 1962, when Shirley was a chorister and the young John Martin the organist. There are quite a few young choristers there who still live in Longparish very interesting!
