Longparish Parish Council

Terms of Reference of the Footpaths Committee

These terms of reference were agreed at the footpaths committee meeting on 24 July 2008.

  1. The committee reports to the Parish Council.
  2. Members are appointed annually at the May meeting of the parish council but will be assumed to be willing to continue from year to year unless they advise otherwise.
  3. The committee aims to assist the Council by helping to ensure that
    1. our 20 plus miles of paths are well maintained and, so far as possible, improved; and
    2. that parishioners and other users are aware of them and of their rights and responsibilities when they use them
  4. Legal responsibility for the state of Rights of Way lies elsewhere but the Parish Council is conscious that resources are limited.  In pursuit of these aims the committee will:
    1. promote use of our footpaths;
    2. facilitate work on footpaths by volunteers;
    3. liaise with landowners, the County Council and other interested parties;
    4. lobby when work by other parties is required;
    5.  report regularly to the Council
    6. recommend annually to the Council a budget relating to its Footpaths activities
  5. As well as councillors, the committee may include other people, as are necessary to meet these terms of reference.
  6. The committee will meet as necessary.  The normal pattern of meetings is
    1. The annual village inspection in June
    2. a meeting in the Spring to consider a work programme.
    3. other meetings as necessary
  7. The committee will review these terms of reference annually.
